Can You Measure Inflammation?
Why hs-CRP Is a Clue—Not the Whole Story
Your cholesterol may look good. Your blood pressure may be controlled. But does that tell us your whole cardiovascular story?
Last week, we talked about the inflammatory fire—and the many factors that can keep it burning.
That naturally raises another question:
“Dr. G, if inflammation can affect my heart, can we actually measure it?”
The answer is yes—but this is where context matters.
One blood test you may hear about is high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, or hs-CRP.
And there's one message I want you to remember throughout today's conversation:
One number never tells the whole story.
🩸 What Is hs-CRP?
C-reactive protein is produced primarily by the liver in response to inflammatory signals in the body.
The high-sensitivity CRP test can detect relatively small elevations in CRP and may provide useful information about cardiovascular risk.
But here's the important distinction:
hs-CRP is a clue—not a diagnosis.
An elevated value tells us that inflammation may be present.
It doesn't necessarily tell us why.
Autoimmune disease activity, recent infection or illness, injury, metabolic health, smoking, excess visceral fat, and other inflammatory conditions can all influence CRP.
That's why looking at hs-CRP simply as a “good number” or “bad number” misses the bigger picture.
❤️ Why Does a Cardiologist Care About Inflammation?
Because inflammation and atherosclerosis are closely connected.
As we've discussed throughout this series, persistent inflammatory activity can affect the blood vessels and participate in the development and behavior of atherosclerotic plaque.
Current cardiovascular guidance recognizes chronic inflammatory diseases, including conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, as factors that can enhance cardiovascular risk.
When hs-CRP is measured, a value of 2 mg/L or higher on more than one occasion is also recognized as a cardiovascular risk-enhancing factor.
But please don't misunderstand what that means.
An hs-CRP of 2 or higher does NOT mean you have heart disease.
And it doesn't mean every woman needs this test.
It means that, in the appropriate clinical setting, hs-CRP may provide another piece of information that helps us better understand an individual's cardiovascular risk.
One Number ≠ The Whole Story

Don't chase the number. Understand the story.
Imagine two women.
Both have similar cholesterol levels.
Both have controlled blood pressure.
Neither smokes.
Looking only at those traditional numbers, their cardiovascular risk might appear fairly similar.
But one of those women also lives with rheumatoid arthritis, has a strong family history of premature cardiovascular disease, metabolic risk factors, and persistently elevated inflammatory markers.
Are their cardiovascular stories really the same?
Not necessarily.
And this is where personalization becomes so important.
Instead of asking only:
“Is my hs-CRP normal?”
I would rather ask:
“What does this number mean in the context of ME?”
That means looking at hs-CRP alongside your:
Autoimmune disease activity
Blood pressure
Cholesterol
Blood sugar and metabolic health
Family history
Symptoms
Lifestyle
Medications
And your overall cardiovascular risk
Because we're not treating a laboratory result.
We're caring for the person behind the number.
🩺 Dr. G's Perspective
I don't believe in ordering more tests simply because they're available.
Testing should answer a question.
If an hs-CRP comes back elevated, I don't want the conversation to immediately become:
“How do we lower this number?”
First, I want to know:
Why might it be elevated?
Is the autoimmune disease active?
Was there a recent illness?
What's happening metabolically?
What do the traditional cardiovascular risk factors show?
What is her family history?
Are there other pieces of her health story we haven't considered?
And then comes perhaps the most important question:
Does knowing this result change what we should do?
That's personalized prevention.
The goal isn't simply more testing.
The goal is better understanding.
🌿 What Does This Mean for You?
I don't want you finishing this article thinking:
“I need to go get an hs-CRP test.”
Instead, I want you asking:
“Would knowing more about inflammation add something meaningful to my cardiovascular risk assessment?”
For some people, it may.
For others, it may not.
That's a conversation worth having with your healthcare professional—particularly if you live with an autoimmune or chronic inflammatory condition or have other cardiovascular risk factors that may not be completely reflected by your traditional numbers.

“Are my numbers normal?”
Ask:
“Do my numbers tell my whole cardiovascular story?”
And if you live with autoimmune disease, consider adding:
“Does my inflammatory condition change how we should think about my cardiovascular risk?”
Two questions.
That's it.
Sometimes better prevention begins simply by asking a better question.
